A select gathering of Balham Brothers in July welcomed Brother Vice President Mario from Osterley

Balham is small in comparison to some of the other Province 19 circles and in the summer dining can be quite an exclusive affair. Our July meeting was one such, but a select group of Balham Brothers were delighted to welcome Brother Mario from Osterley Circle to join us for dinner and witness a typically feisty after-dinner debate! “Enjoying ourselves too much!”

Durham_Millburngate_BridgeBalham Brothers have been to a number of events during May, but in the words of Noel Brownsell “we were enjoying ourselves so much we forgot to take any photographs!”.

Noel and Anne Brownsell, Brian and Valerie Taylor, William Gallegher and Terry & Lucille Brown all attended the Durham Conference (May 15-17). While we all went to different events and stayed in different hotels, we did all get together for the conference itself, which we agreed was most interesting. The traditional beer and curry night held by Balham Circle at the Mirch Masala restaurant in Upper Tooting Road was popular as ever. We were pleased that visiting gentleman John Nelligan and his wife Nuala (pictured below) joined us for our festive feast.

There has been a short break since my last “Join Me” visit and so I’m now proposing two new visits, which have been selected from my list. The first one is to Leighton House in Kensington. I’m proposing that this visit take place on Friday December 5. The second visit Will be to the Magic circle in January. The Magic Circle visit has to be booked in advance and I’m suggesting two options for consideration. The first is a morning visit with the general tour of the Magic Circle Museum and the second is an evening event of magic and mystery.

For more information on both visits go here.

Group2‘Once more unto the breech’ headed an intrepid band of Catenian brothers from Balham and Croydon Circles and friends on August 13 into the lofty portals of the Olympia Exhibition Centre in Kensington, to share good fellowship, witty repartee (at its best earlier in the evening) and to sample some (many?) of the fine English, Welsh and Scottish bitters and ales proffered at the Great British Beer Festival. IMG_4182

Falling, as it does, in the middle of the holiday period and moved from the fourth Monday, the Balham Circle August meeting engendered a lower than normal attendance. Nevertheless it proved, after dinner, to be the occasion for a spirited debate about environmental issues. Continue reading Balham August Circle meeting prompts lively debate with visiting Brothers

Balham brothers visit Reigate’s 600th!

ReigateVisit02014-0709Brothers Noel, William and Terry attended the Reigate Circle meeting on Wednesday July 9 to join them in celebrating their circle’s 600th meeting.  This was also a celebration of 50 years of continuous circle meetings and was all the more special because one of the founding circle members, Bernard Monahan was present.  The other founding member, Tom Corrigan could not be present because he was at Buckingham Palace with the Queen.
